The introductory Kniterate knitting course will take place hands-on this semester in the Soft Rapid Prototyping workshop. The course starts with an introduction to basic knitting techniques (stitches and structures). After the explanation of the Kniterate’s design software, students start to create the files of basic and advanced structures. The sample knitting will take place in small groups, where the course participants can knit their created files, experience and actively learn the process of using the Kniterate machine.

In the second part of the programme the software’s jacquard knitting feature will be presented. The course participants will create the files based on their own designs/ patterns and knit 2 and 3 coloured jacquard samples.

The course aims to give a basic knowledge of knitting with the Kniterate and show the limits and possibilities of the machine. The files and knitted samples can be further developed and used as the basis for a future design project.

The course is organised by Bence Szalay, member of the Textile Prototyping Lab, who studied knitting design and technology at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest. He joined the TPL team 2022 October.
