01. Earth - The Ethiopian folklore

Inspired by the Ethiopian folklore taught in our Vietnamese textbook when I was small: 

The story is about 2 European travelers who come to Ethiopia, they were welcomed by the king and given a lot of treasures as a nice gesture. As they were about to leave the train for home, they were stopped and asked by the locals to remove their shoes, so that the dirt could be scraped off. Curious about this, they were answered: „ We Ethiopian are a country of hospitality, our king has given you a lot of precious gifts, but to us, our soil is the most noble, sacred thing to us. It's like our mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters to us. You can take our gold, our silver away, but you can never take our dirt, our soil away.“

It is interesting today to think back about why we as children in Vietnam got to learn about this folklore, and many of my friends still till this day remember this story as i do. The word „earth“ in Vietnamese, “đất” itself has many meanings. For once it can be „earth“, but it can also mean “land” or “property land”, and it is used to build the first half of the word “nation„ (đất nước).  So ever since we were kids, earth has carried this meaning in our mind as something symbolic for national identity, this story is so powerful and also fits our culture. To pick a medium to work with for the exhibition “Mingled Living Forces„ in Humboldt Forum, i thought of using earth for this reason, to give homage to the story

Inspiriert von der äthiopischen Folklore, die in unserem vietnamesischen Lehrbuch gelehrt wurde, als ich klein war:

Die Geschichte handelt von zwei europäischen Reisenden, die nach Äthiopien kamen, vom König empfangen wurden und als nette Geste eine Menge Schätze erhielten. Als sie den Zug in Richtung Heimat verlassen wollten, wurden sie von den Einheimischen angehalten und gebeten, ihre Schuhe auszuziehen, damit der Schmutz abgekratzt werden konnte. Auf ihre Neugierde hin wurde ihnen geantwortet: “Wir Äthiopier sind ein Land der Gastfreundschaft, unser König hat euch viele wertvolle Geschenke gemacht, aber für uns ist unser Boden das Edelste und Heiligste. Er ist für uns wie unsere Mütter, Väter, Brüder und Schwestern. Ihr könnt uns unser Gold und unser Silber wegnehmen, aber niemals unseren Dreck, unseren Boden.„

Es ist heute interessant, darüber nachzudenken, warum wir als Kinder in Vietnam diese Folklore kennengelernt haben, und viele meiner Freunde erinnern sich bis heute an diese Geschichte, so wie ich es tue. Das Wort “Erde„ im Vietnamesischen, “đất„ selbst hat viele Bedeutungen. Einmal kann es “Erde„ bedeuten, aber auch “Land„ oder “Grundstück„, und es wird verwendet, um die erste Hälfte des Wortes “Nation„ (đất nước) zu bilden. Seit wir Kinder sind, hat die Erde diese Bedeutung in unseren Köpfen als Symbol für die nationale Identität, diese Geschichte ist so mächtig und passt auch zu unserer Kultur. Bei der Wahl des Mediums für die Ausstellung “Mingled Living Forces„ im Humboldt Forum dachte ich daran, aus diesem Grund Erde zu verwenden, um der Geschichte zu huldigen

02. Ambigrams

Ambigrams of the 4 words „shareholding“, „ownership“, „possession“ and „thingification“ are laid with earth, creating a symmetrical tessellation pattern on the Schlüterhof of Humboldt Forum. The words are meant to question the state of the artifacts being held in Humboldt Forum, whether they are considered possessed by them, owned or as a kind of shareholding. Being laid outside for the public to see, the rotational ambigrams make people have to turn their heads, trying to read the word for its design trying to be readable both ways, at the same time criptic. Either they can read them or not, from their perspectives, the words can have their own associations with each person's experience. The piece is therefore made to be read from both ways- as to play with the people's perspectives.

Ambigramme der 4 Wörter „shareholding“, „ownership“, „possession“ und „thingification“ werden mit Erde verlegt und bilden ein symmetrisches Mosaikmuster auf dem Schlüterhof des Humboldt-Forums. Die Wörter sollen den Zustand der Artefakte, die im Humboldt Forum aufbewahrt werden, hinterfragen, ob sie als Besitz, Eigentum oder als eine Art Teilhaberschaft betrachtet werden. Da die rotierenden Ambigramme für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich sind, müssen die Menschen ihre Köpfe drehen und versuchen, das Wort zu lesen, da es in beide Richtungen lesbar sein soll und gleichzeitig eine Schrift darstellt. Entweder sie können sie lesen oder nicht, aus ihrer Perspektive können die Wörter ihre eigenen Assoziationen mit der Erfahrung jeder Person haben. Das Stück ist daher so gestaltet, dass es aus beiden Richtungen gelesen werden kann, um mit den Perspektiven der Menschen zu spielen.

03. The footsteps, the rain and the wind

„Shareholding“, „ownership“ or „possession“, as different in meanings and forms they carry, so as „thingification“, which stays the same even when they are reversed. What i can say is the most poetic about this project is that it brings us back to the story at the beginning, where every Humboldt Forum's visitors will carry the earth away in their shoes. Perhaps they would also avoid stepping on because they respect the „artwork“. Nevertheless, these words, definitions will eventually be mixed up together, erasing the borders between them. I name this project „Our Soil Or Your Soil“, but i don't think the debate is whether it's my soil if i had bought it or it's still the European Soil that people might be stepping on.

„Teilhabe“, „Eigentum“ oder „Besitz“, so unterschiedlich die Bedeutungen und Formen sind, die sie tragen, so wie die „Verdinglichung“, die auch dann gleich bleibt, wenn man sie umdreht. Das Poetischste an diesem Projekt ist, dass es uns zu der Geschichte am Anfang zurückbringt, in der jeder Besucher des Humboldt-Forums die Erde in seinen Schuhen wegtragen wird. Vielleicht würden sie es auch vermeiden, sie zu betreten, weil sie das „Kunstwerk“ respektieren. Dennoch werden diese Wörter und Definitionen schließlich miteinander vermischt und die Grenzen zwischen ihnen verwischt. Ich nenne dieses Projekt „Our Soil Or Your Soil“ (Unser Boden oder dein Boden), aber ich glaube nicht, dass die Debatte darum geht, ob es mein Boden ist, wenn ich ihn gekauft hätte, oder ob es immer noch der europäische Boden ist, auf den die Leute treten könnten.
